Who We Are

Mission & History

Our mission is to promote healthy, vibrant Neighborhoods and serve as the first choice for homebuyer resources in Southern Colorado. Our core belief is that building sustainable communities begins with building stable homes.

NeighborWorks Southern Colorado is a public non-profit organization governed by a Board of Directors. Established in 1977, NWSoCo is a charter member of the national organization: NeighborWorks America.

NeighborWorks Southern Colorado began its journey in 1977 as Neighborhood Housing Services of Pueblo (NHS) with the vision of forming a partnership comprised of neighborhood residents, the business community and the City government creating opportunities for preventing or reversing neighborhood decline, increasing homeownership opportunities and developing a greater sense of neighborhood pride. Soon after its formation, NeighborWorks Southern Colorado became a member of NeighborWorks America and rebranded as NeighborWorks Southern Colorado, staying true to the original mission yet evolving to meet the needs of the greater Southern Colorado community. In 1996, NWSoCo began providing homebuyer education classes (HBE) and one-on-one credit counseling services to better prepare clients for long-term stability in homeownership and build generational wealth.  NeighborWorks Southern Colorado has continued to expand these offerings to include financial capabilities classes and foreclosure mitigation. In 2017, NWSoCo expanded its territory to include the 19 counties of southeastern Colorado due to regional need, as there were very few financial services in these rural markets.  NeighborWorks Southern Colorado added small business lending to services in 2018 and in 2020, NeighborWorks Southern Colorado's subsidiary, Southern Colorado Community Lending, obtained it's Community Development Financial Institute certification. Additionally, at that time the organization began significantly growing the real estate service line to create new affordable homeownership opportunities and developed a new shared equity homeownership model. In 2022, NeighborWorks Southern Colorado built over 20 new homes completing a subdivision on Pueblo’s Westside which was originally started in 2000. In May of 2023, NWSoCo broke ground on a new subdivision slated for over 600 new housing units.  Additionally, we offer low interest down payment assistance loans and rehabilitation loans.
